Make a difference by being yourself
Posted on December 9th, 2008 in "Freelancing Fun & Lifehacks"Anthony from the Positive Space Blog is hosting a cool serie of articles called Creative Advent where designers, illustrators, writers, etc. are giving out the best professional advice they’ve ever received.
I have been really glad to take part in this great initiative! Check out the article I wrote about being yourself in your business approach: Make a difference by being yourself.

Hi,
Good article. I have just been browsing around your other graphic site. Those are some pretty impressive graphics.
I have always wondered do you just have the ability to do those designs or did you learn it; or is it a bit of both.
I have some graphical ability, but I’m not very creative. If you give me something to copy I can do a good job though :D

Hi David, thank you very much for the subscription, glad you enjoyed what you saw ;)
About the designs, for me it’s all about the learning curve. I started out with no graphical/technical knowledge whatsoever. I then developped kind of a style, and in the middle, went to an art school. Personal & taught experience + lot of browsing & keeping yourself up-to-date & inspired, and training, training, training. No secrets I guess.
By the way, your icons look really good, I guess you’re wrong when you say you aren’t creative ;)
Cheers!
Thanks for your reply. I was wondering were you OK at design before you started? If you put something in front of me to copy I can do a good job, but when it comes to working without any aids I can’t do anything. Don’t know if I’d ever be able to do stuff like this:

I find the icons are easy because I am copying things. I don’t like my web design icon set so much, I prefer these ones:

I am going to add more to them :)
I was pretty BAD :p
I wish I had something to show you. I guess I should go through my very old stuff (back in 1998) to dig some horrors!
I’m looking forward to see you new icons!
